Frequently Asked Questions About SEO

Answers to some frequently asked questions?

What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

Each search engine bases the relevancy of a page on selected keywords and key phrases, link popularity, META content, etc... Search engine optimization is the science of designing, coding, and crafting webpage content based on the ranking criteria or algorithm(s) a search engine uses to index a webpage. Page elements that are important to one search engine may not be important to another. And, if a page has poor structure or invalid code, a search spider may have problems reading the page altogether.

What is a search spider or robot?

A search spider or robot is a software program used by search engines to follow (or "crawl") hyperlinks to the depths of a website, reading, and adding each page location into their database for searching purposes. Poor site navigation and broken links prevent a website from being completely indexed.

What's the difference between a search engine and a directory?

A search engine uses an automated robot or spider to crawl the Internet looking for, and gathering links to add to their database or index. Examples include Google and Yahoo. A directory is made up of human editors who manually review a web site and then decide whether it should be included or not. Examples include Yahoo! and Open Directory.

Will my search engine listings always remain high?

This depends. If you are in an uncompetitive field then chances are that you will enjoy your high rankings far longer than those in a very competitive field, such as web design or hosting, for example. Each month more websites are added to the search engines indexes and this may affect your high ranking.
The search engine algorithms may also change which can also have dramatic increases each month. Also bear in mind that once you get the top listings, you are more susceptible to be copied by your competition.

Once I've optimized how long will it be before I see results?

Each search engine and index has its own timetable for indexing your site. Results can be seen anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks. Paid inclusion and directory fees typically guarantee quick turnaround. Human-indexed directories can depend on volume and the quality and relevance of your submission.

How do I keep my website in the top 10?

Search Optimization is an ongoing process. Monitor your position or rank. Review, Revise, and work your links.

What is a META tag?

A META tag is a HTML tag found in the header of an HTML file. A META tag is not a required webpage element, and the content of META tags do not display in a web browser. These tags are used to provide search engines and browsers with additional information or instructions. Among the types of META tags "Description" and "Keywords". The META "Description" tag is often the description that shows up under your search engine listing. The META "Keywords" tag is a list of appropriate keywords and keyphrases to help identify the content of your website.

How do I keep a search engine from indexing portions of my website?

Your website administrator can add a robots.txt file which instructs a search spider to NOT index a webpage. A search spider will look for a robots.txt file when it crawls your site for indexing. A META tag can also instruct a search spider to exclude a file. Read these instructions for more information.

What is Pay Per Click?

Pay-Per-Click campaigns are marketing/ad programs that guarantee a high search result. These programs charge you every time someone clicks on your link. Pay Per Click does not charge to display your listing. Many pay-per-click programs result in bidding wars over specific search terms. Choosing keywords that are less competetive (to keep the cost down) and that produce a high return (attracting the right buyer) requires good keyword research. Pay-Per-Click engines include Google AdWords, LookSmart, and Overture.
